How to Bridge the Treatment Gap: Focus on In-Patient Care
The past few years have seen an uptick in conversations around mental health and mental illness, accompanied by growing recognition of the need to prioritize access to care. Multiple stakeholders have highlighted the importance of affordable and effective treatment options, particularly given the significant treatment gap that continues to exist across the country.
This gap is being addressed through the efforts of healthcare providers, policymakers, non-profits, and community organizations. Today, individuals can access a range of support services, including tele-consultations, mental health helplines (often run by trained volunteers), and evidence-based outpatient care across psychiatry, psychology, and allied specialties.
However, an important aspect that warrants greater attention is the availability of effective in-patient treatment programs for individuals living with severe or chronic mental health conditions, particularly during periods of acute crisis. When symptoms become significantly debilitating and cannot be safely managed at home, admission to a specialized psychiatric facility may become an important part of the treatment and recovery journey.
One organisation seeking to address this need is Fortis Healthcare. Through the launch of its first dedicated in-patient psychiatric treatment facility in December 2025, Adayu – Psychiatric and De-addiction Hospital in Gurugram, Haryana, Fortis aims to expand access to specialized mental health care.
The name Adayu signifies “adding value to life.” The 36-bed facility offers holistic and integrative care designed to support individuals experiencing complex mental health challenges. According to the team, its signature in-patient programs have been developed for conditions including Acute Psychological Crisis, Eating Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, and Substance Use Disorders, among others. The facility also incorporates technological innovations such as neuromodulation and virtual reality-based therapeutic interventions.
“Mental health illnesses in their severe form impact not just the individual but the whole family. Creating a safe space that gives both comfort and confidence to both the patient and their family is a crucial aspect when looking at mental health care in an acute stage of the illness or during a crisis. With Adayu, it is our vision and mission to ensure that the highest standards of care are brought to treatments being provided to those admitted for mental health-related illnesses.”
— Dr. Samir Parikh, Chairperson, Fortis National Mental Health Program and Adayu – A Fortis Group Company
The hospital has been designed with recovery-oriented spaces intended to promote healing and well-being. Open areas, organic farming initiatives, a zen garden, a gymnasium, and recreational facilities have been incorporated into the environment to support a holistic treatment experience.
Mental health conditions often require an ecosystem of care that includes prevention, early intervention, outpatient treatment, family support, and, when necessary, specialized in-patient care. As awareness around mental health continues to grow, expanding access to comprehensive treatment options remains an important step toward reducing India’s treatment gap.
